Short explanation for non-Tolkien readers :

Fëanor was the son of Finwë, the High King of the Noldor (one of the Elven people, rumoured to be the greatest warriors). He created the Silmarils, three sacred jewels of great beauty. A deity called Morgoth (the Middle-earth equivalent to Lord Cutler Beckett) stole them.

Uproar! Anger! Fëanor and his seven sons took an oath that they would retrieve the Silmarils from anybody who would keep them from them. The results were slaying of their own kin and a huge war among the Elves. Naturally, Fëanor and his offspring were not the most popular of all Elves…

The youngest sons of Fëanor were twins called Amrod and Amras. They called each other "Ambarussa", which means "top-russet". Yes, they were red-haired (you see where this is heading, don't you…). Amras was shocked by the deeds of his father, and hid on a swan ship to return home to his mother Nerdanel. Unfortunately, Fëanor set fire to the ship... however, Tolkien never mentioned what happened to Amras.
